Jade Wolthuis is a painter and digital artist based in the Utrecht region of the Netherlands. She studied at HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht), where she began exploring surrealist art and techniques. Drawing inspiration from the CoBrA movement, and established surrealists, she developed an intuitive process of breaking the world down into composite elements and reconstructing it through personal perception. Over time, this approach evolved into a distinctive personal technique that shapes the personal worlds expressed in her work. Her art is deeply psychological, engaging with the psyche through surreal landscapes, entities, and imagined environments. Leveraging her understanding of psychoanalytic techniques like active imagination, she treads the line between the conscious and subconscious. She invokes dreams and psychedelia to help give these realms visual form. Her artistic practice is informed by a deep interest in psychology, particularly the work of Jung. She also takes from surreal cinema and (philosophical) literature. Influences include Mamoru Oshii and David Lynch as well as the writings of Jorge Luis Borges and Kafka.
